[Lecture / Reading] La fille du train / The girl on the train - Paula Hawkins

J'ai lu ce roman car une amie m'avait demandé si je l'avais lu. Non.

I read this novel because a friend asked me if I had read it. No. Have I heard about it? Hmm, no. She let me know that someone lend her a copy of this novel (in English) and she was told that in the UK, it was is a best seller.
Ok, I'm in the UK, and even though I try to be careful not to hang out too much in bookstores because when I left Finland it hurts me to have left behind at least 90% of my books. And no, I do not exaggerate my words!
But I must say things as they are, the bookstore in my town (there is a cafe inside ^ - ^) it was not in front. As against that one in a neighboring city, it was the case.

The title was a bit interpeling: for a long time I was a regular train traveler. It was almost my second home. To say then I sat in the same place as Rachel did (every day she sits in the same place) no. But I crossed the regular ones. And unlike trains from here, we do not have a little woman - or young girl - or a small man who pushes his trolley with drinks (alcoholic or not) and with some snacks back there in Finland. So I was not and am still not as Rachel ...

Was it a mistake to have read some comments about this book? I'll try to do my best without spoiling your reading.
Let's start with the publisher's introduction
:A debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people’s lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.
And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

For my part, I must say that yes, it made me want to read it. My friend informed me that she thought that the person who had lent her this book might be because the person did not know what to think of it. She even was not happy about how the story is presented: in diary form. This is not her favorite style at all.
It does not bother me. I like it  occasionally. Early in the novel, it is through the journals of two young women that we live their situations: Rachel and Megan. Then later, a third person will come to join them.
As you had been able to understand at publisher's introduction, Rachel is a regular of a train at a certain time. It will be understood quickly enough by her diary, she is not happy in her life and is struggling to move forward. Some people will go through with "comfort food" eg., she comforted herself with something else. A little unhealthy. So she made short films in her head about this young couple.

The story is then interspersed by Megane's diary, which she moves back slightly compared with Rachel's, to our understanding her lifestyle, what bother her, etc. And especially to better understand the events that will occur later.Until  the day Rachel's life changed by the simple disappearance of the young woman from the house.Of course, she is interested in the investigation. Has she not seen something that could help investigators move forward in the matter? How will they take it? And especially, when we know what kind of woman is Rachel, who will believe her?We must not forget that there are other characters that come into play. Relatives characters, which may well belong to the past or not, of these women. Who thought they know this young women. When the third voice, I would not say if it's a woman or a man is the voice of anxiety. Especially a big concern about a certain person. The thing I would add is that this book exudes lies. Manipulation. Now how many characters in this novel are affected by both? I will say nothing. Except now I write these words, I wonder how many more people are honest there?

Yes, I acknowledge that I was taken from the start of my reading. Although to my taste I quickly found the frame ... and understand why some comments from readers on Goodreads have compared this book to this one (that is your own risk if you click on the link) because how not to think about it? Diaries, lies, manipulations ... But if I have compared between this thriller and the  one that I just send it to a link, no, sorry, but the second was genius to me.Where I was surprised was that it would be adapted for cinema (like the other one, that respects, I think, very well the book). Because no, I do not think to see it then. Yes it was a good book. That's it for me.Let say, what I liked  in here I would say it is the intercalated between the two diaries of the two young women Rachel and Morgan. This has beenwell thought. As I explained earlier, the one from Morgan lighly back in the past compared to Rachel's, and then  slightly more or less ending when Rachel's starts to tell us her life and what she imagines is happening in the life of this young couple.

If I could put half stars on the note with Goodreads, I would have given 3.5 / 5

Paula Hawkins will come in late November to talk about her novel in one of the city's libraries, and I got "lucky" to have a place and be able to attend the event! As you can imagine, the number of places was limited.
I guess we woule be able to ask questions. If you have any question, I would do my best to ask it.
Otherwise, if you read it, when did you think?

"On mulla asiat joskus osuneet kohdalleen.
Se saattoi vahinko olla,
eikä tapahdu uudelleen.
(Des fois mes affaires allaient bien
C'était peut-être un accident,
et ca n'arrivera plus jamais)
Suru joskus käy, ja ikävää riittää;
kantaa laineet laivatkin.
Mistä mun pitäis ketäkin kiittää?
(Parfois la tristesse rend visite, et il y a beaucoup de négatif;
les vagues portent le bateau aussi.
Pour quoi dois-je remercier tout le monde ?)

- Jossain on kai vastauskin."

Autumn has been taking the invitation itself increasingly in recent days and coz of  the "adventures / misadventures" of my week, I thought that a title in Finnish, it would add a little exotic ...
And it is the title of one of the songs of a Finnish band that I really like: PMMP

The first verse, the song itself if I can say may sound negative, sad but isn't it life: to ask questions about its meaning, wondering why this happens to us then, that 'is what we did to our creator to come to such a fate? With up and down such as a rollcaster?
No, I know I am by nature introverted, melancholic, but that does not mean I do not see or do not try to see things positively!
Although this week some "nagatives things" happened, looking at a certain time to revitalize. It is only postponed or deadlines ... This does not suit me but hey, that's life!

My week in short (I try to make in short):- Earlier this week I looked forward to the return of my PVG Scheme because I needed my membership number to complete a form that I had just received. Form an eventualy job I have in the inning. The agency that had me fill it, my dear Chloe, called me - so she did notseem  very safe and above all a slight accent that I didn't notice when I met her 2 weeks ago- ask to return to the agency this week. She had just received a letter from the organization and it needs my signature. There, I was a bit lost. Do not doubt my English but when you expect to work with children and that here a lot of paperwork to be done, they seem to like it here so much ... I'm beginning to lose patience! I understood PVG, signature, next possibility work week ... If she received the letter why not me? Because the letter is supposed to be sent to both the employer and the person who filled it.I told her that I will come Thursday (to avoid paying too much train). The day after her call, still no mail. I contacted her by email and asked if she could explain to me why I have not received the letter from my side. And there, her reply put me in a state of frustration: my signature was missing on the form and they could not do their process. Very big frustration. Because it implies that everything is given to a fortnight. More for the other one.

As I told a good friend, I do not even know if I should laugh or cry!
Plus it was a rainy day. Downpouring. I love running under a light rain, it does not bother me and I am not afraid. But there it was not possible.
Running is one of my hobbies that I like enormously. For several reasons. But there, I really needed to calm down. Relax. Forgetting my frustration.
At 18.00, the rain subsided but it was night. And where I run it's not necessarily well lightned. Oh well. I go. These sensations of being in the dark, alone among the few walkers with their dogs and joggers, two or three, giving me a smile (yeah, we are not made of sugar! Too bad, I would have taken some advantage from it then), made me feel good. Not to forget the songs that poured in my ears.
So yesterday, 4 hours round trip to sign where I had forgotten.

- Aujourd'hui.

- Today. I thought I had an appointment in the early afternoon, to a bank to open a bank account. Other info that my eventual employer asked me. It seems like, the bank, they are very busy because no appointment within a week. And when I was there seven days of that today, I was  told me "in one week time", a paper printed with date and time. I had it in my hand bag since.
So this morning to make sure I remember well the time I see "Date: 29.10.2015." Not possible. I was sure that the person had told me that it was Friday! Today!! I look at the current date on my tablet: 30.10.2015. How can be stupid sometimes !!! Aaaarrrggggghhhh. So I gave Cheri's bank informations on the form I have to sent back. What you should know about him, he is very positive. He is a fan of Christophe André and positive thinking. It's okay, it happens sometimes this kind of stuffs, he said.I must say that this morning I was not in agreement. Two, almost, in the same week started to do a lot. To me.Short visit to the dear bank, explaining the situation and how I was sincerely sorry. A new appointment was given. I looked and put it on my phone to let remind me! Plus my calendar.

It's life. It is made with ups and downs. Otherwise we would be bored without the roller coaster it offers us, wouldn't we?
To my friends, no worry. I am fine. Just need to be more patient that I though...
Meanwhile, I decided I deserved a good movie with "Crimson Peak".
Wishing you a good weekend.

What was my surprise to see that there was a new book with characters from "To Kill a Mockingbird"! The word "sequel" does not apply here because it seems Harper Lee had first writen this novel but the editors refusing it, she re-wrote the story that we all well know "to Kill a Mockingbird."My reading was slow. Not beacuse I was enjoying my reading, taking pleasures in words but stupidly because I had trouble to get in. Wondering what could give life to the novel. What would be the trigger. To my opinion this is not a novel that easy to criticize. At least until I learned that the author wrote it before and she was advised to make some change in her writing and change a little bit the story. Because yes, indeed, it has more the flavor of a blank ... Some aspects of the book seem a little hazy.Fortunately it was not big book either. It was not until I arrived at half of it that I was able to enter deeper into the book.

So yes, we find "To Kill a Mockingbird" characters twenty years later Scout, 26, who grew up and is always equal to herself. And her father Atticus, 72, who get old.The story revolves mainly around Jean Louise "Scout" who is on holiday when she returns to her hometown. But then when you live for several years in a large city like New York and although meantime has returned to his / her hometown, there is always the truth that hit their faces. In this case, Jean Louise "Scout" had a hard time to accept to see what had been happening around her. She does not tolerate it. It raises some questions of course, but she is so stubborn... Is it them who have so changed or her? And if they, why are they like this? What has become of their idea of justice / policy? Disappointment, indignation, revelations. Of course, there are also the good times between complicity and sweetness of life.A little hard to break the image that idealizes her childhood to what is found opposite.

Would I advice you this book? Well, if you wish to read it, go on. But than I would advice you to borrow it. If you have read it, what did you think about that book?

[Film] Suffragette

To be honest with you, although I had seen the movie posters on the right and left with the names of great actresses Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Marie Duff, and Carey Muligan. Not to mention the brief appearance of Meryl Streep! I had a vague idea, of course, the subject of the film, I must say that I wore him no interest. Any more than that.
I even skipped the pages in the Marie Claire Octobre 2015 magazine about this 2015 event movie.

A few days ago, I come across Mrs Pinecone au pays des merveille's article: Suffrajitsu (I will ask you to go there to read the one she was inspired from). (I invite you to read her blog. It is in English as well) because there was something that I had not realized then: those women who fought, or being judged or  point fingers because they knew what they wanted - and they were right after all, and I thank them for their battle - to have the right to vote, to be respected as a man would be by its kind ... The thing I had not realized then reading Mrs Pinecone, it was the violence they faced from the police. Certainly, the policemen did their job but was that a reason to be so violent towards women? (Maybe then, they have forgotten who gave them birth) I imagine that at the time, yes. Women were to hold a lesson from their acts.
If a married man couldn't control his wife, he would be embarassed, ashamed by his wife's behaving.

One side pictures from the film, the other side represent posters or newspapers from that time pictures.

Deeds not words.

Her article had opened a little bit more my mind, curiosity. With Chéri, when we went to see the latest Ridley Scott'smovie, I saw on the till publicity for the film Suffragette. Deeds not words
Then in the room, we saw the movie's trailer. Chéri told me that it could be a movie I would appreciate it. Based on true events...

Marie Claire U.K. 10/2015

From Marie Claire UK magazine, October 2015: Suffragette is the story of the women who risked their jobs, homes, children and even their lives, to fight for the right to vote at the turn of 20th century. Finding that peaceful protests were achieving nothing, women resorted to "deeds not words" through violent protests, public vandalism and prison hunger strikes, spurred on by pioneering British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst.

So I went to see it. A room mostly full of women.
Of course it's a lady who made this film: Sarah Gavron. It makes you wonder if a man would have done better in the sense that would that man have been more involved than a wman?
A film that has not left me indifferent when I left the room.
A beautiful film. Beautiful, not only for the scenery, but also for the costumes,  actresses playing who were just brilliant.
There were violent scenes, however. And for me, this is where I realized that it necessarily did not go smoothly then. Those suffragettes who wanted were looking to be heard. After each of their protest, hoping to have a few lines highlighting in somes newspapers, the views of readers of their actions. The hungers strikes during their stay in prison and what followed ...
Besides, one of the spectators applauded depending committed to actions or words said.

During the film, we follow the footsteps of Maud Watt, married and mother. She sees things that hurt her as a woman. That may be what pushed her to want to listen to one of her colleagues talking about their working conditions, encouraged by the movement that fights for the right the vote for women. But now, she finds herself in the battle. And it can cost her a lot. Let us not forget - and this is one of the things I learned by watching this film- is that a mother had not much right on her "own" child than is a father!
To my opinion it's a movie to be seen. I think Sahar, Riikka you might like it!

Et vous, si vous l'avez vu, qu'en avez-vous pensé ?  / And you, if you saw it, what did you think?

Découvrir à travers mes yeux : Dundee (1) / Discovering through my eyes Dundee (1)

Dundee...

Dundee... Two months today, day for day, that with Chéri we moved here to start our new life. It has happened quite often Scottish people asked us our opinion about this city, and when we answered that we like it, it seems it's a bit hard for them to believe it. They advice us to move to a bigger, nicer city as Perth, Edinbugh (still love the way they say it and start to do my best to say it the same way as them).

One of my passion is photography (for the one who doesn't know me) and as I am looking for a job, depending of my moods, inspirations from the day, it's with my camera in my bag that I go discover Dundee. Still yet after two month when I go running or try to find a new path, I would think: hei, I have to come here to do some shooting!

How many pictures have I taken in those first two months? I don't know. A lot. I stil have some on my memery card that I haven't download yet. This is why I think I would do a two or three times pictures series.
For now I welcome you to Dundee!

If you keep your way to the centre, there is what I call the city "stars": penguins statues. But it seems some peope here have a bit of humor as sometimes they are dressed!!

(My dear Englsih speakers friends, you just need to click on the link - title- to have more information. I will write a post when I would visit it as it is a museum)

Discovery

After RRS Discovery, nothing better than a walk nearby the river Tay.

 Tay Bridge
Through your walk, you would face the Tay Bridge, wich carries  the main-line railway acrossthe river. Train coming from or going to Edinbourgh goes there.
This one is the second bridge. The first one had a disaster back in December 1879.

A suivre... / To be continued...
