[Photos] Dunnottar Castle

As promised in my last post on Monday, here are some pictures of our weekend.
At least a first series ...
Saturday afternoon we discovered the Dunnottar Castle, about 3km south of Stonehaven, under a shinning sun! It took me time to convince Chéri it was a place to see by making him seeing pictures of the castle on the cliff.

My friend Wiki (and I thank him) informs us for the historical side: The Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress built on a rocky outcrop. Its architecture is characteristic of the thirteenth century, but it was built on a previous castle site, erected by Caledonian tribe, dating back at least to the year 84.
Dunnottar played an important role in Scottish history from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, by its strategic position on a narrow coastal terrace, overlooking on one side the waterways to the north of Scotland and the other can control land movement.
He resisted for eight months in 1652 the troops of Cromwell and was dismantled in 1715.

The ruins of the castle are spread over 1.4 hectares (3.5 acres), surrounded by steep cliffs that drop to the Noth Sea, 50 metres (160 ft) below. A narrow strip of land joins the headland to the mainland, along which a steep path leads up to the gatehouse. The cliffs and rocky promontories that form the coastline for kilometers north and south provide habitat for thousands of birds, making this stretch of coast an important sanctuary in Northern Europe, both in terms of the number of birds and the variety of species.
