Having read and liked "Cold comfort farm" and being attracted by the cover of this book, I read it ... And I did not know what to think at the end of my reading. It was seeking from other readers reviews that I discovered that it was a novel "forgotten". Relatives of the author found it and, as for the novel "Go set a watchman" by Harper Lee, was published. Makes you wonder if sometimes, it is better to leave these forgotten novels where they are ...
Comment s'est déroulé cette lecture pour moi ? Je dois dire que j'ai eu du mal à entrer dans l'histoire. Cela s'était fait lentement. J'ai eu du mal à sentir de l'empathie pour Juliet.
Juliet qui est une adolescente de 17 ans, douée en maths, et obtient "5 A level" à son examen final. Elle n'a pas d'amis, et parait aux yeux des autres tellement bizarre, incompréhensible. Un phénomène étrange. Elle est la fille unique d'une famille ouvrière, et son père refuse d'entendre parler d'études supérieurs malgré les recommandations, des professeurs de l'adolescente, qu'elle devrait partir à l'université.
Juliet vit dans son monde. Elle a besoin de calme et de solitude pour pouvoir penser. Ses compétences sociales sont quasi inexistantes. C'est à se demander si elle peut ressentir des émotions. Une chose est sûre, elle n'a aucune empathie. J'en étais venue à la voir comme une autiste tellement elle est ancrée dans son monde, ne prêtant pas attention à ce qu'il se passe autour d'elle, préférant la compagnie des animaux aux humains... Dans l'histoire, elle s'acharnera à travailler sur les coïncidences. A comprendre le sens même qu'est une coïncidence...
Dans tous les cas, elle s'est bien débrouillée pour se trouver une bienfaitrice en une vieille dame sans enfants, prête à tout pour elle et qui l'adore comme si elle était sienne.
Je n'en dirais pas plus, pour ceux qui souhaitent le lire mais un passage du livre, mais cela commençait à devenir encore plus difficile à aimer, apprécier Juliet. J'étais à deux doigts d'abandonner cette lecture.
How did this reading go for me? I must say that I struggled to make it though the story. This was done slowly. I struggled to feel empathy for Juliet.
Juliet is a 17 year old girl, good at math, and gets 5 A level. She has no friends, and appears to others so bizarre, incomprehensible. A strange phenomenon. She is the only daughter of a working-class family, and her father refused to hear about higher studies despite recommendations the teenager's teachers, she should go to university.Juliet lives in her world. She needs quiet and solitude in order to think. Her social skills are almost nonexistent. It makes you wonder if she can feel emotions. One thing is certain, she has no empathy. I had come to see her as an autistic so much she is rooted in her own world, not paying attention to what is happening around her, preferring the company of animals to people... In the story, she will relentlessly working on coincidences. To understand the same sense what a coincidence ...In any case, she has done well to find a benefactor in an old lady without children, desperate to help her out and love her as if she was her own.I will not say more, for those who wish to read the book, but it was becoming more difficult to love, appreciate Juliet. I was on the verge of abandoning this reading.
Dans l'entourage de la vieille dame, bien entendu, certains se posent des questions par rapport à cette adolescente. A se demander ce qui est vrai ou faux dans les propos de la jeune fille.
Il y a le neveux de cette femme, Frank, qui vit lui aussi un peu dans son monde, amouraché par les jeunes femmes qui lui font penser à des êtres féeriques comme par exemple les sirènes. Lui aussi se pose des questions sur la véritable face cachée de Juliet. Mais surtout il pense voir en elle le potentiel d'un génie comme Einstein et suite à certaines circonstances, il la prendra sous son aile et deviendra son protecteur.
Protecteur qui se trouve dans un dilemme entre sa protégée et son amie d'enfance Clemence.
Clemence est une jeune femme qui n'a d'yeux que pour Frank et attend depuis longtemps quelque chose de lui. Elle est donc facilement jalouse lorsqu'il y a une autre personne entre le jeune homme et elle.
A un point de l'histoire, cela peut ressembler à une équation comment les trois personnages vont évoluer tout en trouvant leurs places sans se gêner... Tous les trois ont un point commun : avoir une obsession.

L'histoire progresse, les personnages évoluent, prennent de l'âge. Et pourtant, la deuxième moitié du roman, je me demandais où l'auteure voulait en venir. La fin est tellement abrupte qu'elle aurait pu arriver plus tôt, je n'en aurais pas été surprise ! Peut-être que c'est moi qui ait raté quelque chose.

The story progresses, the characters evolve, grow older. Yet the second half of the novel, I wondered where the author wanted to take us, meant by it. The end is so steep that it could have happened earlier, I would not have been surprised! Maybe it's me who has missed something in my reading.
